A Little Drummer Boy
By Katherine Kennicott Davis

Come, they told me
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
Our newborn King to see
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum

Our finest gifts we bring
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
To lay before the King
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
Rum, pa, pum, pum, rum, pa, pum, pum

So to honor Him
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
When we come

Little Baby
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
I am a poor boy too
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum

I have no gift to bring
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
That's fit to give a King
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
Rum, pa, pum, pum, rum, pa, pum, pum

Shall I play for You
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
On my drum, on my drum

I played my drum for Him
For You honored me

Mary nodded
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
The ox and lamb kept time
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum

I played my drum for Him
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
I played my best for Him
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
Rum, pa, pum, pum, rum, pa, pum, pum

Then He smiled at me
Pa, rum, pa, pum, pum
Me and my drum

When we come
Me and my drum

The Christmas carol I attended sung the famous song “The Little Drummer boy”. This is carol is originally known as “Carol of the Drum”. It was written in 1941 by Katherine Kennicott Davis. I believe the carol/song is celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. As it mentions the gifts the three kings brought them. In the carol Jesus is portrayed as a hero or as who he always was portrayed as, a lord. The carol depicts the three kings willing to serve for Jesus, willing to play the drums for him. It states that there is no gift to bring so instead the carol states that he or she will play the drum. Jesus is portrayed as a “He”. In the carol he brings harmony to the people as the people bears him with gifts and love.
My Shema
My first shema would be God is our creator: This is because I personally think God craeted us and will advise us. However, he will not intervene into our lives. He will leave a distance.
My second shema would be God is the only one. What I mean by this is that we should only focus on praying to God. Not to other idols, not to other Gods but only our savior.
My third shema would be God is superior than us. I personally believe God is much better and stronger and that we must admit it. God can be our friend but we must view him as something higher, something we aim to be.

Buddhism: Following the Path to Enlightenment Reflection

Through the short meditation I have learnt a lot. Ranging from personal insight to general insight of Buddhism itself. The short meditation we did in class was quite amusing at first. I never knew there were 8 types of meditation. One of the biggest things that made the meditation difficult was the awkward silence that followed when everyone was meditating. Teenagers of today's society are not used to quiet time. There life is filled with external sounds ranging from cellphones, tv's to music from speakers. This caused me to feel awkward when it was completely silent, which I thought was the most difficult part of meditating.

Throughout meditating and visiting the temple I learnt two new things. I learnt that I can really use some silence in my life when I need to concentrate or when I have to clear my mind. Especially during the meditation, despite the awkwardness I felt with the silence, it really helped me concentrate and helped me think clearly and calmly for once. I never felt this calm and concentrated for a long time. Another thing I learnt is about Buddhism. Through the temple visit I learnt that they value life and death greatly. Going through the rooms of small buddhists and the hidden yearns behind the statue made me realize that death in Buddhism is a great deal. This is because some buddhist believe in after-life that they adorn the small cemetery with small gifts and pictures to let the deceased cherish his or her last memories of her before life.
Hinduism in Action
Gandhi’s most famous quote “An eye for an eye makes the world go blind” truly depicts what Gandhi believes in. Throughout the movie, anyone can notice that his strikes and what he says are all very peaceful. He did not strike his hand on any person nor did he never tell anyone to lay his or her hands on anyone else. Especially during the beginning of the movie where he quotes the bible saying that if an enemy strikes your left cheek, he tells the white man to show his right cheek. This is for, as Gandhi, explains, your enemy will have this sudden respect for you where they realize they are wrong. Which later Gandhi pursues throughout all his peaceful strikes.
Another perspective Gandhi sheds light on with his quote “a man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks; he becomes.” Throughout the movie he thought he can make a difference by always telling himself and persevering through all the beatings he received to finally achieve what he truly wanted. He always told himself throughout the movie that he wanted to make a difference and because he thought that way, it truly motivated him to do what he wanted to be. Also throughout the movie he tells many citizens to act like what you want to be viewed as, changing thousands of views and creating a non-violent protest.
After an intense hour of yoga, I felt much more relaxed. I actually felt calmer, which made me think that I was one with myself letting me go through the day with a very calm and good attitude. While practicing yoga, it was very painful. Especially when trying to certain positions were very hard. However, in the end when everyone did the “corpse position” it felt very relaxing. It felt as if my body was melting and it was ready to be molded. I personally believe Hindu’s personally practiced yoga because it would help them achieve their maximum status to be one with themselves. This is because yoga really calms a person down and when a person is calm and does not get affected by negative remarks or comments that is when he is near. This is why I believe Hindu’s practice yoga.

Oh head, how did you come and why did you come?
You offer us protection and bring us rain.
In thank we give you sheeps and lambs.
Oh please protect our land well.

Stop the storms, stop the waves
Gives us calm winds and tell us the future.
Stop the scary, bright spears coming down from the sky
Please do not leave us, not once again

Oh head we thank you for giving us life
for letting us live longer, for curing my parents curses
You told gave us a prophecy
You told us not to worry and everything will be fine

You face the new world
You can see the future and everything head.
Please tell us what we have to engage in
What we have to do to survive, oh please dont leave us

  1. Michael,
Good viewpoint in the poem and the deep need of gods is evident. Not sure what the "prophecy" line is saying- make sure it's a final edit before publishing.

  2. Michael,
Well done coming up with 2 insights. I'd like a little more specific reasoning behind the need for quiet.

  3. A "shema" is a statement about who God is and how we respond. You 3 beliefs lead us to understand your shema- which wasn't actually written. Also you didn't tell me any experience that helps you hold these beliefs.
